Re: the March 26 article "UA's 'ouch/oops' idea can lead to a hmm moment"
Tim Steller's front page column struck a familiar note. This program was introduced to several school districts in the county in New Jersey in which I was a central office administrator about 16 years ago.
Teachers and paraprofessionals were trained to use this non-confrontational process with early elementary school children. "Ouch" stickers were distributed to be used as described in Steller's column. The program was discontinued when the teachers complained that the young students were too mature to use such a childish form of expression and dealt with conflict much better when normal language was used to discuss and resolve differences.
The stickers, however, became a popular method of faculty members amusing themselves by sticking them on the microwave when leftovers were reheated and generally tagging each other for sport. I guess those little K-3 kids were more mature than UA students.
