Given the news the United States will withdraw from the Paris Agreement, it is imperative that local and state governments, along with individuals and grass-root movements, step up to fill the void in leadership on curbing carbon emissions, and creating a healthy environment and jobs through clean energy. With this in mind, I applaud the Tucson Mayor and Council for holding the study session on climate change this past week. The Mayor himself had numerous excellent suggestions for improving the Tucson economy such as going solar for all CAP water production. However, I was disappointed the final result of the study session was more committee and public meetings. The community has already met and discussed these issues for years through planning opportunities such as Plan Tucson, and the Climate Advisory Committee, It's time to act: Adopt goals such as Council Member Romero suggested, 100% renewable energy for all city operations. Put the action items together to achieve the goals economically and implement. Council leadership is crucial now.
