This letter is in response to the editorial by C.J. Karamargin in todays paper regarding civility in the public discourse. The broad strokes in Mr. Karamargin opinion which casts all protesters and resisters in the same category with no nuance or distinction is irresponsible. The people or groups I know who are engaged in the democratic process are non-violent or threatening.

Civil discourse is people calling their elected official to speak their mind, and protesting so that their voices can be heard. Civil discourse is sometimes angry and mad. It never should be violent or threatening– as that is a different kind of discourse.

A strong democracy can only happen with engaged people. We are engaged. I wonder if Mr. Karamargin would say a rally cry to “Lets get this f**king this done” is civil? With few exceptions, what you are experiencing is precisely what makes this country great.
