Re: the May 17 letter "Apology for bombings is critical in many ways."

I read the letter concerning the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with disbelief that even the Star would publish it. Does this person have any knowledge of the historical facts of that situation? Or is he forgetting the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, killing some 2500 Americans, starting the war with Japan? Does he not know that we offered Japan an option of surrender prior to the bombings, which they refused? Did he ever read any of the estimates of how many lives would have been lost if we had invaded Japan? Japan needs to offer an apology not the United States.
