Firefighters Killed Anniversary

Flag-topped shovels with the names of the Granite Mountain Hotshots on their blades are a reminder of the 19 firefighters who lost their lives during the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013.

PRESCOTT, Ariz. โ€” Residents of Yavapai County will honor 19 firefighters who died battling a wildfire two years ago with a moment of silence Tuesday.

The Prescott-based Granite Mountain Hotshots were overrun by flames in brush-choked canyon near Yarnell. One crew member who was at another site serving as the lookout survived.

Ceremonies are planned at the Yavapai County Courthouse plaza and in Yarnell with moments of silence and bell tolls. They won't be as elaborate as last year's commemorations.

Some of the men's families are gathering for a private ceremony at the cemetery where some of the Hotshots are buried.

Earlier Tuesday, the state Land Department is auctioning off the site where the Hotshots died. The state Parks Department is hoping to win the bid for a memorial park.
