A boy visiting Chiricahua National Monument today is being treated at Tucson Medical Center after he was bitten by a fox, officials said.

A nine-year-old boy was bitten by a gray fox today at Chiricahua National Monument, officials say.

The boy and his mom  had just gotten out of their car at a monument pull out when the fox bit the boy’s left calf, Arizona Game and Fish said in a news release.

The fox was being aggressive before it bit the boy, the agency said. It is suspected to be rabid.

The boy was being treated at Tucson Medical Center.

Game and Fish was searching for the fox Wednesday afternoon at the monument, about 120 miles southeast of Tucson.

In Arizona, bats, skunks, and foxes are the primary carriers of rabies.

Each year about 15 people are exposed to rabid animals in Arizona.
