El Charro Café will close its Speedway and Swan location on Saturday to make way for Sir Veza’s Taco Garage, a new concept that combines a streamlined El Charro menu with a decidedly casual atmosphere.

“I want to do something very different here,” said El Charro President Ray Flores, who said he hopes to create a gathering spot in the middle of town.

Sir Veza’s will have roll-up garage doors and an indoor-outdoor bar that spills out onto Speedway, a boulevard whose reputation was built on muscle cars cruising the strip on weekends. In fact, it is that spirit that Sir Veza’s hopes to recapture. Flores said the restaurant will have a hot-rod-themed interior design, to be created by noted Tucson custom auto designer Johnny Vegas of Hi-Speed Rods & Customs.

The menu, with entrees priced $10 and less, will borrow from El Charro and will include burgers, chicken wings and a Mexican-food takeoff on chicken and waffles — chicken and churros.

Flores said he also is in talks with Nimbus Brewing Co. about crafting signature Sir Veza’s brews, including one to honor designer Vegas.

Flores hopes to have Sir Veza’s, 4699 E. Speedway, opened in six to eight weeks. The eatery’s employees will be relocated to other El Charro locations until the new restaurant opens, he said.
