Students at Legacy Traditional School collected more than 5,000 cans of food to help families in need.

The canned goods, collected over 10 days at the northwest side charter school, were picked up Tuesday by the Marana Community Food Bank.

The food drive is held annually and was organized by the elementary student council.

One class, Lindsey Oswald‘s sixth-graders, brought in 571 cans.

While Tom Ellis, a Legacy Traditional School teacher and student council adviser, is pleased with the outcome, he hopes the food drive resonates with students for years to come.

“When you have a chance to help, you should help and it’s not just seasonal,” he said.
