“Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Hence, be patient and thoughtful.
“Nattering Nabobs of Negativism.” What in the world are they gonna bring to the table?
“To be or not to be — that is the question.” Think of all the things YOU could be if you had the stamina to answer that question!
“Civil Discourse is the bedrock that created American democracy.” What could we be as a nation today if we’d revert back to this practice in weekly Town Hall meetings similar to those of our forefathers?
“We have met the enemy and he is us.” Pogo’s sage wisdom stands out here if you think about it in regard to the current state of American politics.
“Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” Oh boy, that adage could go in all kinds of different directions.
“Time if of the essence.” Savor time because we’re allowed only so much of it while on this planet.
“Custer died for your sins.” Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse would sincerely believe in this deduction. Libby Custer, his widow, wouldn’t.
“The sun will come out tomorrow.” That is, if we continue to be undeservedly lucky.
“Seek and ye shall find.” Whatever you seek, you will assuredly find — whether it’s the Good, the Bad, or the Ugly. Here’s hoping it’s the good you seek because there’s more than enough of the other two in the world today.
“Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.” If we listened to this heart-rending story of the massacre of American Indians, we’d celebrate Native Americans Day instead of Columbus Day.
“United we stand, divided we fall.” This is the challenge for our generation, our children’s generation and our grandchildren’s generation.
“If the shoe fits, wear it.” That could attract a kick in the pants. In other words, be happy with what you have.
“You have a face only a mother could love.” And you know mothers are always right! Even though we might be unattractive outside, we can still be beautiful inside.
“Simple is as simple does.” Ask simple Simon, who was a pieman, what the heck that means, for he has the answer to that one. Otherwise, we never knew what they were talking about.
“That’s the way the ball bounces.” Unless you’re a fan of Arizona football.
