We need a better conversation about the future for Tucson's youth -- it's time to start asking bigger questions (β€œTucson youths struggle with how to prepare for unknown jobs of the future,” Oct. 21).

We can and should train youth for a new job market, but what if there aren't enough jobs? We can automate more than half the work we get paid to do now with current technology. A study from Oxford this May shows that computers will even be able to study and improve themselves in as little as 45 years.

No matter how good our education system is, we have to prepare for the scenario where there just won’t be enough jobs. While we explore solutions like access to education and job retraining, policymakers must also talk about how to meet Arizonans' basic needs in case a job won’t cut it.

Our children deserve that much.
