Tucson students are in the home stretch as far as this school year goes.
But, they're not in the clear yet. The AzMERIT assessment tests begin next week. (Seriously, how are we here again already???)
If the thought of these tests send your kids into panic mode, we've got your back with 7 ways to help them prepare.Β Β
First, a couple things you should keep in mind
AzMERIT does not keep all students from progressing to the next grade level. But third graders must get a certain score on the reading portion of the test to move on to fourth grade.
It is not the finish line. Yeah, it's a big test. But it is still just one test and it doesn't tell the whole story. The assessment test is about progress, not perfection.
How to help your kids
Talk to your child's teacher
The teacher has been working with your child all year and is an excellent resource for what support you can give your student at home to prepare.
Practice critical thinking
Ask your child how to solve a math problem or ask them how to explain the details of a book they're reading.Β
The tests are about explaining and demonstrating their work.Β
Practice at home
Your child can take a practice AzMERIT test at home. Click hereΒ and sign in as a guest.Β
Reduce stress at home
Kids can feel your tension, so keeping your own stress levels down can help your child succeed. Emphasize to your child that she doesn't have to be perfect and that she always has your support.Β
Set them up for a good morning on test days
Make sure they get to bed on time, make a good breakfast and try to make the morning go as smoothly as possible.Β
Stay positive
Encourage your kids to do their best and reinforce your support no matter the outcome.
Remind him (and yourself) that the test is just a check point and the results are used to set goals for skills that need work.
And, make sure to celebrate every success.Β
Keep track of test days
Make sure you're aware of when test days are coming up so you can keep other activities to a minimum.Β
