Arizona commit Brandon Williams will likely not sign with the Wildcats during the early signing period that starts Wednesday because of the ongoing FBI investigation into college basketball, his father said Tuesday.
Chris Wright, Williamsβ father, said his son remains solidly committed to the Wildcats but is β99 percentβ likely to wait until the spring period.
βWeβre gonna have a call tonight to talk about this but as of right now, Iβm gonna say no,β Wright said Tuesday. βIt looks like it will probably be a spring decision. Weβre still 100 percent Arizona and not looking at other schools but still looking at it day by day. If Sean Miller gets through this investigation, thereβs a good chance heβll sign.β
It is unknown if Arizonaβs other remaining commit from the class of 2018, Shareef OβNeal, will sign this week. Coaches for OβNealβs club and high school teams could not be reached for comment.
During his weekly news conference, Miller said he didnβt know if any players would sign with the Wildcats during the fall period. Players can either sign a binding letter-of-intent or non-binding scholarship papers, though coaches typically prod players to sign the binding letters and reserve scholarships for those who do.
Several top players in the high school class of 2018 have backed off interest in Arizona since the federal investigation became public on Sept. 26, when UA assistant coach Book Richardson was arrested on bribery and fraud charges.
Point guard Jahvon Quinerly, who was alleged to have taken money from Richardson, decommitted last month while several others dropped the Wildcats, including Bol Bol of Mater Dei High School in California, forward Nassir Little of Florida, forward Simi Shittu of Burlington, Ontario and R.J. Barrett of Mississauga, Ontario.
