A former University of Arizona assistant track and field coach who was sentenced last week to five years in prison for assaulting a student athlete has been transferred to the Arizona Department of Corrections for placement.

Craig Carter, 50, has been housed in the Pima County jail since his March 30 conviction on two counts of aggravated assault, one with a deadly weapon. Carter admitted to police that he choked former thrower Baillie Gibson in his office in 2015 while threatening to cut her face with a box cutter. The two had previously been involved in a sexual relationship, which Gibson says was not consensual.

Carter was sentenced May 14, weeks after he pleaded guilty to additional charges of stalking and violating a restraining order. He will serve his sentences on those convictions concurrently with his prison term for the assault conviction.

On Friday morning, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman confirmed that Carter had been transferred to the custody of DOC officials.

Carter will be taken to the DOC's intake center in Phoenix, where he'll spend a few days being processed and assessed before he's moved to where he'll be permanently housed, said DOC spokesman, Andrew Wilder.

Carter will likely be placed at his permanent facility later next week, Wilder said.
