Kevin Sumlin inched closer to landing another recruit from the state of Texas on Tuesday after four-star quarterback, Grant Gunnell, listed the Arizona Wildcats as one of his top college choices, per 247Sports.
UA will be a possible destination as well as Ohio State, California and UCLA.Β
Listed as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class, the 6-foot-6 Gunnell is from Houston and threw for 4,936 yards and 61 touchdowns. Gunnell also tied the Texas state record for single-game touchdown passes with 10 in a 69-13 win in September.Β Β
The former Texas A&M commit visited Arizona in April and has been high on the Wildcats in his recruitment especially because of his established relationship with Sumlin and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.Β
"I loved my official visit there and was surprised how nice Tucson was," Gunnell told 247Sports. "I have a great relationship with the coaches there, Coach Sumlin and Coach Mazzonne. I was committed to them at Texas A&M so I know the system they're going to be using and I think it's a great fit for me."Β
UCLA started recruiting Gunnell later than the other listed schools and didn't officially offer him until early May. Don't count out Chip Kelly and Bruins though. UCLA "was a really big offer" for Gunnell and admired Kelly's offense when he coached the Philadelphia Eagles with Nick Foles running the show. Gunnell would also prefer to make his college choice sometime in the next month.Β
"I want to try and get back to UCLA again for a visit if I can and ideally, it would be great if I can make a decision sometime in June," Gunnell said.
If Gunnell selects the Wildcats, he would become Arizona's third recruit for the 2019 class from Texas, joining three-star cornerback Logan Wilson and two-star running back Michael Wiley.Β
