The Arizona Wildcats have suffered their first significant injury of 2017.

Redshirt freshman Bryson Cain, the team’s top backup at left tackle, will miss the season because of an ankle injury.

Cain was one of four players listed in the UA’s injury report for the opener against Northern Arizona (Saturday, 8 p.m. Pac-12 Networks). Also out against NAU: safety Isaiah Hayes (shoulder), DE-LB DeAndre’ Miller (foot) and tight end Jamie Nunley (back).

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez had said there was a chance Hayes could play against NAU, but apparently that won’t be the case. Miller has been in a boot throughout August after undergoing foot surgery in July. It is hoped that he will be able to return sometime in September.

Losing Cain is a big blow because it hits a position lacking in depth. The listed backup to starting left tackle Layth Friekh is redshirt freshman Josh McCauley, an untested walk-on. Cody Creason – listed as a co-starter at right tackle – could play on the left side if necessary.

Other possibilities in an emergency situation include transfer Maisen Knight and freshman Edgar Burrrola. Ideally, both will redshirt this season.

Arizona recently added transfer Thiyo Lukusa, but he must sit out this season after playing for Michigan State last year.
