Blake Martinez

Stanfordโ€™s Blake Martinez has 121 tackles this season and a good chance to be named the leagueโ€™s defensive player of the year Tuesday. Martinez played high school football for Mountain View, Santa Rita and Canyon del Oro and has a 41-12 record with the Cardinal.

Tucson native Blake Martinez has dreamed of playing in the NFL since he was 6 years old. On Saturday, that dream became a reality.

The Green Bay Packers selected the Canyon del Oro High graduate in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. The Packers took the Stanford standout with the 131st overall pick.

Martinez recorded 141 tackles, including 6.5 for losses, as a senior for the Rose Bowl-champion Cardinal. He also tested extremely well at the NFL scouting combine in February, including a time of 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Inside linebacker was considered a position of need for the Packers, who play a 3-4 defense and have a great reputation for developing their draft picks. The Packers have used Clay Matthews there in recent seasons, but outside linebacker is his natural position.

Green Bay drafted Utah State outside linebacker Kyler Fackrell in the third round.

Arizona inside linebacker Scooby Wright continued to play the waiting game as the fourth round concluded.
