Arizona Wildcats football

The Arizona Wildcats resumed spring practice Tuesday afternoon after a layoff of nearly two weeks. Here are some notes and observations from spring workout No. 2:

* Freshman offensive lineman Jacob Reece has enrolled in school and should be practicing with the team soon, possibly as early as Thursday. Reece attended practice in street clothes and needs to pass his physical before being cleared.

* Another freshman offensive lineman, Jonah Savaiinaea, worked with the first unit at right guard. That shifted Josh Donovan to the left side.

Jayden de Laura took most of the first-team reps at quarterback. He was a little inconsistent with his ball placement, likely a byproduct of not having worked with this receiving crew very long. His best ball came on a throw over the middle to tight end Alex Lines.

* UA coach Jedd Fisch wanted to see more takeaways by the defense, and he got them. Isaiah Mays intercepted Jordan McCloud during 7-on-7, and Jaydin Young picked off Will Plummer during 11-on-11. Freshman tailback Jonah Coleman fumbled at the end of a run. It was recovered by safety Jaxen Turner.

* Freshman QB Noah Fifita didn’t get a ton of “team” reps, but we feel confident in saying that he has the strongest arm of all the quarterbacks in camp.

* Receiver Dorian Singer showed excellent change-of-direction skills during a one-on-one drill with defenders trying to position their bodies for a tackle. Singer also made a nifty leaping catch over Treydan Stukes on a sideline pass from de Laura.

JB Brown, who played defensive tackle, and linebacker Ammon Allen registered sacks during 11-on-11 play.

* Receiver Jacob Cowing scored a long touchdown on what appeared to be a jet sweep.

* Receiver Jalen Johnson participated after missing the first practice. Likewise new defensive tackle Tiaoalii Savea, who worked with the second unit. Linebacker Malik Reed continued to work on the side while he recovers from a hamstring strain. He is expected to practice Thursday.

* Linebacker Jerry Roberts was a limited participant, including one 7-on-7 session. Roberts is working his way back from a broken leg suffered late last season.

* Tackle Joseph Borjon, who transferred to Arizona from Mt. San Antonio College, is noticeably taller than every other lineman. He’s listed at 6-7, 339, and looks every bit of it.

* Redshirt freshman Jackson Bailey worked as the No. 2 “Cat” defensive end behind Hunter Echols.

* Arizona will practice in pads for the first time Thursday, Fisch said.
