Cameron Cannon, Cesar Salazar, and Jacob Blas all had three hits as the University of Arizona baseball team routed visiting Nicholls State 11-3 on Thursday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Blas drove in three runs while Salazar drove in two as the Wildcats pounded out 15 hits.

Robby Medel (2-0) earned the win with 4 2/3 strong relief innings. He allowed only one unearned run on four hits. Starting pitcher Avery Weems gave up two runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Arizona (14-10) took control quickly with five runs in the first inning. After Nicholls State cut the lead to 7-3, the Wildcats put the game away with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Matt Fraizer and Donta Williams both drew two walks as UA had seven as a team.

The teams meet again at 6 p.m. Friday.
