Next season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play for thirds: His third NFL championship, his third league MVP and his third Super Bowl MVP.
After leading the Chiefs to a victory in Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night in Glendale, Ariz., the conversation immediately turned to what heβll do as an encore.
Mahomes won his second league MVP for leading the NFL in regular-season touchdown passes (41), passing yards (5,250) and QBR (77.5). Three days later, he won his second Super Bowl MVP, completing a feat that hasnβt been done since Kurt Warner did it in the 1999 season: Win the league and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards in the same year.
Mahomes and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts dueled it out Sunday night in Super Bowl LVII, with Hurts having the better stat line β three rushing touchdowns to go with 304 passing yards and another score β but Mahomes β three TD passes on just 182 yards in the air β winning the hardware.
Those two QBs finished Nos. 1 and 2 in the regular-season MVP voting, with Mahomes getting 48 out of 50 first-place votes.
And it seems like the two talents will battle it out again next year for top player. But it shouldnβt be just a two-man race.
