Figured it was worth checking out what that retention plan for Rich Rodriguez, Sean Miller and Greg Byrne was worth these days with the news that Rodriguez is staying at Arizona.
It's down quite a bit. In fact, as of today's value, it's down 46 percent compared to when the plan was drawn up in May 2014.
Rodriguez is scheduled to get a 25 percent cash payout of his allotted 175,000 shares if he stays until next March, but the drop means he'll collect only about $925,000 as of today's share price.
The master limited partnership shares that make up the plan dropped 15 percent in the previous four weeks and are now worth about $21 as of midday today, meaning the 175,000 shares allotted to each coach are worth about $3.7 million. Byrne has 100,000 shares set aside that are now worth about $2.1 million.
Miller will be 25 percent vested in the plan next year (Rodriguez instead gets the immediate cash payment) and Miller will collect the full $2.1 million value of a separate, university funded retention plan in 2016.
Regents approved an accelerated version of the booster-funded retention plan in September. Miller will be 100 percent vested in that one if he stays until 2020.
