The new look for Sparky, the ASU mascot

ASU unveiled a makeover for its mascot β€” Sparky β€” today.

Many fans, however, seem to think the new look is lacking in anything magical and and merits a do-over β€” though that might be some UA-bias showing.

Disney teamed up with ASU to develop a new design for Sparky, first created by a Disney artist in 1946.

In fact β€” at the right angle β€” Sparky now resembles Buzz Lightyear. Maybe, it's just the over-sized head like the ones many of the characters wear at Disneyland.

Apparently ASU β€” which worked with Nike in 2011 to redesign the school's pitchfork β€” will keep using old Sparky on clothes, merchandise, banners, and other applications.

The new Sparky will be the on-field mascot.

In August the University of Arizona showed off a makeover for Wilbur and Wilma.

The Wildcats paid about $25,000 to help update the mascot couple for theΒ  2012-2013 sports season.
