Baseball season opens Wednesday in Tucson with Cowboy Up Classic

Baseball season kicks off in Tucson on Wednesday afternoon.

The 20-team Ideal Physical Therapy Cowboy Up Classic runs through Saturday night at Kino Sport Complex South, just west of the stadium. Pool play begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. and continues through Friday night.

Cienega coach Tony Gabusi and Sahuaro coach Mark Chandler originally started the tournament eight years ago.

“We're looking forward to great weather and good baseball,” Gabusi said. “We're all trying to find out who can do what. We're tired of playing each other and scrimmaging intra-squad, so let’s see what we can do against the real deal and that’s what we’re all trying to find out.”

The field holds a number of returners from the state playoffs including Ironwood Ridge, Salpointe Catholic, Flagstaff and Gilbert Campo Verde. Other Tucson teams that will be represented include Cienega, Pueblo, Catalina and Cholla.
