For the third straight year Eric Marcotte won today's El Tour de Tucson 111-mile cycling race.Β
He held off another former champion by less than a second.
Marcotte, a 32-year-old Scottsdale chiropractor, edged Rafael Escarcega, who won the 2009 event. They finished in 4 hours 13 minutes and 28.29 seconds and 4:13:28.89, respectively.
University of Arizona graduate student Linnea Herbertson was the first female finisher over 111 miles. Her time was 4:39:03. She beat Stanford doctoral student Fiona Strouts (4:39:05).
The final sprint to the finish along Sixth Avenue downtown was mared by a crash when former cycling Olympian John Howard collided with a parked civilian motorcycle. Howard, of Encinitas, Calif., was taken to the hospital but is not believed to have any broken bones, an El Tour race official said.
Today marks the 30th El Tour de Tucson race β the largest perimeter cycling event in America. The five races include 111, 85, 60, 42 miles and a kids fun ride.
