Santa Claus

The holiday season is in full swing, and that means that winter is not just coming — it's finally here. The cold temperatures will keep many people indoors for the foreseeable future, with plenty of idle time to pass by. The more refined folks might opt for a good book to settle down with, but if reading's not your thing, fear not — there are plenty of quality movies available for streaming from the comfort of your own home.

To help get everyone into the holiday spirit, PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, ranked the 60 best Christmas movies you can stream. To do this, PrettyFamous found all movies with at least one online streaming source — Netflix, HBO, iTunes, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, Tubi TV or Youtube — and over 1,500 IMDb votes. Films are then ranked according to their Smart Rating — a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and Audience Score, IMDb rating, Metacritic Metascore, Gracenote rating and its inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross. In the case of a tie, the movie with the higher inflation-adjusted cumulative box office gross ranks higher. To qualify for our ranking, a film is considered a Christmas movie if it contains Christmas themes in its plot or title.

There are some timeless classics that make the cut — "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street" are must-sees — as well as some more contemporary films that have become holiday staples, like "Elf" and "The Polar Express." From earnest, wholesome tales of Christmas miracles to crude comedies, there's something for every type of film buff this winter.

Note: All films were available for online streaming as of Nov. 11. Descriptions for each movie are sourced (with minor edits) from Gracenote.
