Tucson Rodeo - Rodeo stock

Pickup men Shandon Stalls, left, and Matt Scott, watch intently as bucking horses move from corral to corral during feeding time at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. The 91st annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros began last Saturday, Feb. 20, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 28, featuring everything from shopping opportunities to more than 100 horses and 60 bulls.

The smells:

The aroma of cigar smoke mingling with cow dung wafts over the area behind the east bleachers, where booths line the walkway and rodeo-goers and performers stroll. Each step brings a different experience—cotton candy, leather, a musky perfume worn by a couple of women in cowboy hats, tight jeans and boots. There’s an earthy, comforting feel to the scents floating around the grounds.
