Dads try their hands at styling their daughters’ hair at Beers and Bows at Tullia Salon and Spa.

Styling a little girl’s hair into a ponytail or an updo is an important skill for parents to master, even dads.

Fathers, grandfathers or uncles who are challenged in that department will get their chance to learn from professional stylists — while sipping craft beer — at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the second annual Beers and Bows, an event designed especially for dads and their daughters at Tullia Salon and Spa, 1825 E. River Road.

The idea came to Jessica Figueira, the salon’s owner, when she saw a news video online about a man that was holding classes on how to style daughters’ hair. She thought it would be a great way for fathers to get in some bonding time with their daughters, while giving them a useful skill.

“Originally I thought this would be a great way for dads to really spend quality time with their little girls, a chance for them to show them just how special they are,” Figuiera said. “As time went on and I started to really spend some thought about what we were doing I realized how important these classes are to our community. We as a society have changed. Fathers have really started playing a much bigger role in parenting than in generations prior. We have fathers that stay at home to raise the kids, single fathers raising the kids on their own, grandfathers and even uncles taking kids to and from school and after-school activities.”

The salon created a fun event to share knowledge with both dads and their kids, and it was a success, with about 35 dads in attendance.

The fun starts right when you walk in the door. Dads get a craft beer and daughters get a goodie bag with combs, ponytail holders and more.

There will be four stations, manned with stylists to go over each topic — hygiene, ponytails and buns, braiding and easy updos — with the dads while their daughters sit in the salon chair.

There will also be food, punch, raffles and giveaways.
