Tucson's biggest fans just opened a boutique on Fourth Avenue.
It's called Mabel's on 4th (located where How Sweet it was Vintage used to be before moving up the street) and it's owned by Nicole and Johnny Carrillo.
The store is full of new, vintage-looking kitchenware. There's a bunch of stuff you never knew you needed or wanted; like a citrus peeler, or a carrot curler, or a pie crimper, or fancy sugar tongs.
"We don’t sell pots and pans, or cutlery, or table top stuff. It’s just fun things that make your kitchen smile," Nicole says.
The store opened on Nov. 9, 2016, a month after the couple moved to Tucson.
The Carrillos lived in Savannah, Georgia, where they had a similar store called Kitchens on the Square. They originally had plans to move to San Antonio until Nicole came to Tucson and fell in love with the city. She made a few trips to Tucson and found the How Sweet it was Vintage space, and made the decision to make the big move.
"I don't even know what it was but my husband has completely fallen in love with the desert for his art," Nicole says. "And everybody is so cool here, I have friends already."
Johnny is currently taking desert art classes at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. He makes most of the art in the store, while Nicole runs the store.
Nicole wants Mabel's to become a destination.
"I want to make it a part of Tucson. Come hang and browse around. It's fun," she says.
