Salvation Army in need of turkeys, pies for meal

Pick up an extra turkey while you're out shopping this Saturday and help families in need have Thanksgiving dinner.Β

The Community Food Bank ofΒ Southern Arizona, the Salvation Army, and Gospel Rescue Mission are working together, for the first time,Β to collect frozen turkeys outside 14 Tucson-area Safeway and Albertsons stores.

"We don't know exactly how many donations to expect. We are working together to get more done," said Norma Cable, spokesperson for the Community Food Bank ofΒ Southern Arizona.Β "It is a convenient way for people to donate the weekend before Thanksgiving while they are shopping for themselves."Β

Only frozen turkeys will be accepted; thawed or partially thawed turkeys cannot be donated. All turkeys will be distributed through partner agencies.

If you're not out shopping Saturday or can't donate a turkey, you can donate money online or donate cash or other non-perishable food items at each participating location.Β

"We rely heavily on donations," Cable said.Β
