Over 54 million U.S. households own at least one dog, according to a 2015-2016 survey by the American Pet Products Association.

But deciding which Fido friend is best for one's home can prove difficult. While some dog owners look for exotic breeds like the Afghan hound or the Xoloitzcuintli, others stick to American favorites like the golden retriever and the German shepherd.

That's why the data analysts at PetBreeds, a pet research site powered by Graphiq, found the 100 most popular purebreds in America. The 50 most popular breeds are presented here. They used the American Kennel Club's 2016 data — the most recent available — to create the ranking. Each year, the AKC utilizes pet registration data to order 189 officially recognized purebreds by popularity.

While some breeds on this list have topped the charts for over two decades, others like the silky terrier and the Neapolitan mastiff recently jumped into the top 100. No matter your favorite, these pups are sure to make a great addition to your family.
