A 52-year-old man was struck and killed early Wednesday morning as he crossed the street on Tucson's south side, police said.
Jorge Alberto Mejia was struck by an SUV about 2:30 a.m. as he crossed South Sixth Avenue north of East 22nd Street, Tucson police said Thursday in a news release. He died at the crash scene.
Police say Mejia was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by a light-colored SUV that was headed north on South Sixth Avenue. The driver fled.
"Mr. Mejia attempting to jaywalk was the major contributing factor in the collision," the release said. "However, locating the suspect vehicle and driver that fled the scene is the primary focus."
