The senseless tragedy in Las Vegas demonstrates the U.S. still needs to discuss gun control. The lack of policies to address gun violence is one reason why the U.S. has higher rates of injuries and deaths than other countries.

A sensible solution to gun control will involve a multi-disciplinary approach. Four areas of reform include: banning the sale of military-style assault weapons, implementing stronger background checks, increasing access to mental health services and making schools safer. This year alone, there have been seven U.S. mass shootings.

In 2011, our Tucson community was similarly affected. NowΒ Congress, community partners, medical professionals and public health professionals must act together. As a public health student and registered nurse, I see how a multidisciplinary approach frames much of public health. Gun violence will require the same approach. While the U.S. constitution guarantees the right to bear arms, we all share an equal responsibility to make the U.S. a safe place to work, live and play.
