Mandarino to lead new UA diabetes centerΒ 

Lawrence J. MandarinoΒ will lead the new UA Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.

He also will be chief of the new Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the UA College of Medicine–Tucson.

Mandarino comes to the UA from Arizona State University, where he was director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and director of the Mayo/ASU Center for Metabolic and Vascular Biology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.

His research is aimed at treating insulin resistance syndrome, which increases the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, β€œall of special concern in the Latino population,” the UA said in a news release. In 2009, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Cure Award.
