Photographed in May of 2016, this great blue heron (Ardea herodias) was one of many roosting in a stand of cottonwoods near the gulf coast of the Gran Desierto, Sonora, Mexico. A rare freshwater spring, or pozo, emerging from the dry salt flat, makes such a heronry possible in this harsh location, otherwise sparse with trees. These images are a result of a presently active arts-and-science investigation of these springs and the life they host. The arts component will go on display at the University of Arizona Museum of Art in next January through April 2019 as a part of a larger arts-and-science initiative and exhibition, titled 6&6, which pairs six scientists with six artists whose work aims to portray and better understand the Sonoran Desert through these collaborative efforts.
