An international organization that promotes public events and festivals has chosen Tucson for its annual conference.
The International Festivals and Events Association will bring its annual members convention to the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort in September.
“Tourism is one of the five T’s of Tucson’s economy,” Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said at a news conference at Visit Tucson’s downtown office announcing the event. The other T’s, the mayor said, are technology, trade, transportation and teaching.
Conference attendees will include representatives from at least 500 events and organizations from across the world, said Steven Schmader, president of the International Festivals and Events Association.
Schmader estimated the event will bring more than 1,000 hotel room rentals and consumer spending at area restaurants, bars and shops.
Some of the planned attendees and speakers come from groups such as the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, Memphis in May International Festival, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Baku (Azerbaijan) 2015 European Games and the Kentucky Derby Festival.
While many represent geographically bound events, others organize itinerate events and festivals.
Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik said the event will showcase the region to many people who might not otherwise come to Tucson.
“Hosting this event isn’t a good thing for Tucson, it’s a great thing for Tucson,” Kozachik said.
He also said the convention will be the chance for regional tourism and government leaders to learn from other communities and event organizers.
“We’re not above poaching,” Kozachik said.
Visit Tucson President Brent DeRaad said his organization hopes to use the opportunity to expand the Tucson brand and grow regional events.
Festival Event Association of Tucson and Southern Arizona will host the IFEA 60th Annual Convention Sept. 21-23 at Starr Pass. Find more information at ifea.com.
