State officials say all functions of the department are moving, most of them to the Agriculture Department, as Weights and Measures is shut down.

PHOENIX — The state agency that investigates rogue moving companies, makes sure you get the gas you paid for at the pump, and offers other consumer protections has begun moving its duties.

Gov. Doug Ducey is closing the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures by July 1 of next year with a stated goal of making government more efficient. All its functions will continue elsewhere, said Andy Tobin, director of the department.

The transition began in August, when three employees overseeing vehicle-for-hire licensing for livery services, taxis and limousines moved to the Transportation Department. The Agriculture Department will take on the rest of the duties and personnel.

Tobin said the administration remains committed to oversight, noting that his department added two inspectors this year. Founded in 1987, it keeps 17 to 21 inspectors on staff, he said. Duties heading to Agriculture include investigating complaints about such things as prices found by grocery store scanners or propane tanks not filled to the stated amounts.
