Local residents interested in working in law enforcement or as a firefighter can attend a job fair today hosted by Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild.

Two important drivers of the local economy are trade and tourism. Both depend on the “safe and efficient flow of goods and people across the border,” the Office of the Mayor said in a recent news release.

The expanded Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales needs adequate staffing to function at full capacity, but has 170 unfilled customs officer positions. The job fair is an effort to fill those positions.

"Trade and tourism are two of the Five T's of our local economy, so it's important for Tucson and the rest of the state that we have adequate staffing at our border ports of entry to safely expedite the flow of goods and people,” Rothschild said in the news release.

Rothschild said he hopes many veterans apply for positions, particularly at the Tucson Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Tucson Fire Department also will be on hand with job openings.

The job fair will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pima Community College Downtown Campus, 1255 N. Stone Ave.
