Banner Health selected local contractor Sundt Construction Inc. and partner DPR Construction to construct the new 11-story tower at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson.
Pending zoning approvals, Sundt I DPR, a joint venture, will begin preparing the site and utilities late this year, with construction on the $400 million project starting in early 2016, Banner said in a news release.
Kip Edwards, Banner vice president of development and construction, cited “Sundt’s innovative approach to technical construction and deep roots in the community, and DPR’s expertise as the nation’s No. 1 health-care builder.” Sundt has been building in Tucson since 1929.
The tower, which will replace the 40-year-old portion of the hospital at 1501 N. Campbell Ave., is expected to open in 2019, with 336 private patient rooms, 22 operating rooms, imaging suites, public spaces, and configurations for “current and future health-care technology.”
As previously announced, architects are Shepley Bullfinch of Phoenix and GLHN Architects and Engineers Inc. of Tucson.
Sundt I DPR also will remodel the original hospital building, which opened in 1971, for non-patient-care uses such as administrative functions.
The company has also been hired to renovate two floors and the lobby of the adjoining Diamond Children’s medical center.
Banner Health, an Arizona-based nonprofit organization with hospitals in seven states, acquired Banner-University Medical Center Tucson this spring in a merger with the University of Arizona Health Network.
