Banner-University Medical Center received new zoning this week.
The approval of the Tucson City Council was needed to create Planned Area Development zoning for the 33-acre property because the hospital is changing hands from the Arizona Board of Regents to Banner Health.
University-area neighborhoods approved the change, although some individuals objected due to concerns about noise and traffic.
Banner plans two phases of redevelopment projects.
The first will add more parking and a new 700,000-square-foot tower, with a maximum height of 185 feet plus elevator equipment.
The existing Diamond Children’s tower is 100 feet tall plus rooftop equipment, according to city memos.
