UA College of Education’s Johnson drops ‘interim’ tag, is appointed permanent dean

Bruce Johnson, who has served as interim dean of the University of Arizona’s College of Education since July, has been appointed permanent dean.
Johnson began his career at the UA in 2000 as an assistant professor, after working for many years as an elementary and middle school teacher in Arizona and New Mexico and as director of outdoor schools in New Mexico and Australia.
He became head of the college’s Department of Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies in 2007.
As dean, Johnson’s priorities include research, improving ways for working professionals to become teachers, and fundraising for scholarships.

Fortis Inc., the Canadian parent of Tucson-based UNS Energy Corp., has named UNS President and CEO David Hutchens to the additional role of executive vice president for its Western utility operations, effective Jan. 1.
In his expanded role, Hutchens will continue to lead UNS and its subsidiaries, including Tucson Electric Power Co., while providing operations oversight to FortisBC and FortisAlberta.
A former Navy nuclear submarine officer, Hutchens joined TEP in July 1995 and advanced to various management and executive posts before becoming the company’s top executive in May 2014.

Biomedical engineer Jennifer Kehlet Barton was named director of the Bio5 Institute at the University of Arizona.
She is focused on positioning Bio5 to capture the momentum of the “fourth industrial revolution,” a concept focused on a new era — one that is highly automated and cross-disciplinary.
Barton, a professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, optical sciences, and agricultural and biosystems engineering, has been on the UA faculty since 1998. She served as Bio5 assistant director from 2009 to 2012 and became interim director in 2015.
Her research expertise is in translational biomedical optics, as well as the prevention and early detection of cancer. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Before that, O’Connor served as the senior director for major gifts at the UVM College of Medicine. O’Connor also served as interim director of development for Fletcher Allen Health Care, now the University of Vermont Medical Center.

She comes to SASO from Wisconsin where she served on the board of directors of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Previously Krueger worked as orchestra manager for Symphony in the Valley, a community orchestra serving the Roaring Fork Valley in western Colorado.
Krueger will support all aspects of the general management of the orchestra – from negotiating guest artist contracts, scheduling venues and overseeing the box office to cultivating donors, sponsorships and grant opportunities. She also will be involved in marketing and community relations.

Banner-University Medical Center and the University of Arizona Department of Surgery at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson have welcomed surgeon Dr. Amanda Arrington.
Dr. Arrington, a cancer surgeon, joined the department’s Surgical Oncology Team from Marshall University’s Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center in Huntington, W.Va.
Dr. Arrington specializes in the treatment of a wide range of cancers, including stomach, colon, liver, pancreas, skin, endocrine and breast cancer and soft-tissue sarcoma.
With Dr. Arrington’s arrival, Banner-UMC Tucson is able to provide Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy to patients with certain complex abdominal cancers, minimizing chemical exposure to the rest of the body, and reducing the side effects of chemotherapy.
She earned her medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota, where she also received fellowship training in surgical infectious disease. She then completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif.

Banner-University Medical Center and the University of Arizona Department of Surgery at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson have welcomed surgeon Dr. Kenneth A. Fox.
Dr. Fox is a pediatric and adult cardiac surgeon specializing in congenital heart disease. He comes to Tucson from Austin, Texas, where he had a private practice for 15 years. He also served as medical director of the Children’s Regional Heart Program at the Children’s Hospital of Austin and the Dell Children’s Medical Center, also in Austin.
Dr. Fox earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Arizona. He then completed a thoracic surgery residency at the University of Michigan and a pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan.
In addition to his appointment in the UA Department of Surgery, Dr. Fox will be a member of the UA Sarver Heart Center and the UA Department of Pediatrics.

James Gierke, a native of Southern Arizona, began his career in social work in Tucson in 1999.
He most recently served as director of victim services for the National Organization for Victim Assistance.
Gierke’s prior experience includes time at the Pima County Attorney’s Office in the victim witness program and the specialty prosecution domestic violence court team. He also coordinated employee assistance programs for the Arizona Department of Corrections and managed the DOC’s critical incident response teams.
A nationally recognized expert on victim assistance, Gierke has provided training and technical assistance to staff of more than 1,000 victim services and law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.
He frequently presents on topics ranging from cyber-crimes and identity theft to sexual assault, domestic abuse, and homicide victimization responses.

David Solorzano has come on board as Lodge on the Desert’s new executive chef. Solorzano has created a new menu for the boutique hotel’s restaurant, now called Cielos. The menu highlights local and traditional ingredients for a modern interpretation of Southwest cuisine. A graduate of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, Solorzano has over 15 years of restaurant experience. His career before taking the helm at Cielos has included positions such as chef de cuisine at Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch, and cook at Miraval Resort and Vin Tabla. Additionally, Solorzano’s Animal Farm food truck won Best Food Truck in Tucson.

The Arizona Technology Council has hired Jeff Sales as the new executive director for the Council’s Southern Arizona office.
Sales brings more than 25 years of management experience to the role and will be responsible for driving the Council’s mission of making Arizona the fastest growing tech hub in the nation.
He is responsible for all aspects of the Council’s Southern Arizona operations including event management, membership development, marketing, public policy, and community relations.
Sales joins the Council after more than 15 years at Arizona Engineered Products where he served as president and partner. Sales also worked as business development manager for local contract manufacturer, Mastek-InnerStep, and served as senior aide to Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup from 2003 to 2011.

Anthropologist Hunt named dean of UA Honors College

Terry L. Hunt, an internationally renowned anthropologist, archaeologist and educator, has been named dean of the University of Arizona Honors College.
Hunt will join the UA in September.
Hunt previously served as dean of the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on the human and environmental histories of the Pacific Islands, where he has conducted field research for more than four decades. Hunt has led study-abroad courses for the past 18 years to Rapa Nui (Easter Island), where he involves students in his field research.
Prior to joining the University of Oregon in 2013, Hunt taught anthropology at the University of Hawaii from 1988-2013 and served as director of the campus-wide honors program from 2010-2013.

County Attorney LaWall appoints criminal division chief

Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall has appointed Thomas Weaver to be the new chief of the criminal division.
Weaver has more than 30 years experience as an attorney. His legal career began as an assistant city prosecutor in the Tucson City Attorney’s Office, where he worked until he was recruited to join the county as a deputy county attorney in the criminal division. Weaver also worked in the civil division before he was appointed the division’s chief in 2015.

Flagg has been a deputy county attorney in the civil division since 2008. Prior to Flagg’s time at the agency, he clerked for Judge Joseph W. Howard of the Arizona Court of Appeals.

A 35-year golf industry professional, Price will be charged with leading golf operations at the Oro Valley golf course.
Price was previously a golf professional at El Conquistador CC and head golf professional at the Rio Rico Golf Resort. Most recently he was the head golf professional at The Gallery Golf Club.
Before The Gallery, he was the Director of Operations for the Southwest Section PGA Southern Chapter for eight years and was the director of golf at the Omni Tucson National for six years.

A Tucson native, Roundhouse lived in Tuscaloosa, AL, from 2011 to 2015, where she co-founded the Tuscaloosa chapter of Writers in the Schools. She also planned and directed events drawing on the local art, music, and poetry communities.
As executive director, Roundhouse plans on continuing to create space for and amplifying the voices of women writers, writers of color, writers from the LGBTQIA community, and writers from other underrepresented communities.
Smejkal promoted with Tucson Airport Authority

Mike Smejkal has been promoted to vice president of planning and engineering.
The new position is part of a TAA reorganization that returns planning and engineering to a separate division as it was until 2013.
Smejkal joined the TAA in July 2012 as director of engineering. In February 2014 he was named senior director of development services leading the team responsible for TAA’s planning, environmental, design and construction projects at both Tucson International Airport and Ryan Airfield.
Prior to joining the TAA, Smejkal was a project manager and engineer for Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc., a Midwest-based consulting engineering firm with 14 offices.

Pima Animal Care Center has hired Kristen Auerbach to serve as its department director. Auerbach currently serves as deputy chief animal services officer at Austin Animal Center in Texas. Auerbach, who is a nationally recognized expert on creative lifesaving solutions for municipal shelters like PACC, begins her new role July 10. Last year, PACC saved 90 percent of the pets who entered its shelter and is actively working to increase its save rate for baby animals and big dogs. In her current role at Austin Animal Center, which takes in 18,000 pets annually and is a municipal shelter like PACC, Auerbach has helped lead the organization to a save rate above 96 percent. Chris Dunkeson was promoted to Area Vice President of Comcast Arizona and New Mexico markets. Dunkeson, a 25-year cable industry veteran, has experience leading business operations, in technical expertise, customer service, marketing, finance and public relations. He joined Comcast in 1993 as a service technician in Albuquerque. Since that time, he has held various positions including online general manager for the Southwest Area, director of operations for northern New Mexico, vice president and general manager for central and northern New Mexico, and Southwest Area Director of Public Relations and Government Affairs. Northwestern University Provost named RCSA President

Daniel I.H. Linzer, the retiring provost of Northwestern University, has been selected as the next president and CEO of Research Corporation for Science Advancement. Linzer will assume his new post in October, succeeding Robert Shelton, who stepped down in February. Linzer has been Northwestern’s provost since 2007. Before that he served for five years as dean of the University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Research Corporation for Science Advancement was founded in 1912. County health department names new leadership

New leadership is in place at the Pima County Health Department. Marcy Flanagan was named Health Department director. She is replacing Dr. Francisco Garcia, who was promoted to assistant county administrator for Health Services. Formerly an advancement officer, Jones will be responsible for leading CFSA’s efforts to serve donors. In addition, she will work with the director of gift planning, Mary Louise Luna, to help individuals, families and nonprofits build philanthropic legacies. Jones brings more than two decades of experience as a nonprofit leader focused on development and growth. She has worked in the community foundation sector for approximately 10 years, first at CFSA and then at Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation as the Director of Donor Engagement. Prather named Pima County JTED deputy superintendent

Kathy Prather has been named the new deputy superintendent of the Pima County Joint Technical Education District. Prather has served as the career and technical education and JTED director for the Sunnyside Unified School District since 2012. Prior to joining Sunnyside, she was the CTE Director in the Tucson Unified School District. Starting July 1, Prather will serve as second-in-command of the JTED District and act as the district’s leader when the superintendent is not present. Her job duties include being the point person for the Business and Industry Council, overseeing facilities and maintenance, and coordinating program reviews for all central and satellite campus programs.
