After losing its last standalone golf driving range last year, the Tucson area will soon gain a multi-tier range and entertainment center in Marana.

Dallas-based Topgolf plans to open a range and entertainment center later this year at the former site of The Practice Tee, at 4050 W. Costco Drive.

Though many golf courses have ranges, The Practice Tee was the area’s last standalone range when it closed last July.

The Marana facility will be the third in Arizona, joining locations in Scottsdale and Gilbert. The company has 31 centers, including 28 in 21 states and three in England.

Topgolf locations feature multi-level driving ranges with climate-controlled hitting bays and target greens and balls that automatically keep score for games rewarding accurate shots.

Patrons pay $5 for a membership card that tracks their scores, and hitting bays for up to six people are rented hourly for $25 to $45 per hour depending on the time of day.

Topgolf centers also feature full-service restaurants and bars, game rooms, private event spaces, meeting rooms and free wireless internet access.

A Topgolf spokeswoman declined to comment but confirmed the company is committed to opening in Marana and said more details would be released soon.

Topgolf’s development plan was approved by the Town of Marana on Feb. 14.

“We think it’s a wonderful use of the property and we’re really happy to have them in town,” said Ryan Mahoney, Marana’s director of development services.

“It’s a use that appeals to a broad audience,” he said, citing the restaurant, meeting spaces and family-friendly golf games.
