One of BYU’s defensive ends has appeared in 70 college games — for the Cougars’ basketball team.

Corbin Kaufusi has started 36 times over the past two seasons for BYU, averaging 4.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks while shooting 59.6 percent from the field.

Kaufusi originally came to BYU to play football before a growth spurt during his mission led him to the basketball court. His brother, Bronson, played football at BYU before becoming a third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens this past spring. Their father, Steve, coaches the Cougars’ defensive line.

Corbin Kaufusi is listed at 6 feet 9 inches and 270 pounds. He’s part of the D-line rotation and is expected to play on special teams, where he’ll be a threat to block kicks. Defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki told the Salt Lake Tribune that Kaufusi blocked a punt during a scrimmage.

It’ll be fascinating to watch Kaufusi try to tackle Arizona’s Tyrell Johnson or J.J. Taylor should that situation present itself. Johnson is listed at 5-7, 164; Taylor at 5-6, 170.
