In its effort to replaceΒ Dave HeekeΒ as its athletic director, Central Michigan has selected 16 people to serve on a search committee. It includes students and faculty, those who probably wouldnβt know a capable AD if he or she walked into their living room.
Itβs not the best way of doing business. When Arizona PresidentΒ Peter LikinsΒ searched for an AD to replaceΒ Jim LivengoodΒ in 2010, he told former NCAA executive directorΒ Cedric DempseyΒ to βgo find me an athletic director.β
As a committee of one, Dempsey hand-pickedΒ Greg Byrne. And when Byrne left, UA PresidentΒ Ann Weaver HartΒ appointed Dempsey and ex-UA associate ADΒ Rocky LaRoseΒ to find a replacement.
They found Heeke in almost record time, which, in retrospect, was a no-brainer.
Some schools arenβt as resourceful.
