When thinking of the most popular dog breeds, family favorites such as the Labrador retriever, German shepherd and golden retriever immediately come to mind. While these pups have proven themselves to be some of the most popular four-legged pals from year to year, another crop of canines has earned themselves the title of most improved.
Whether it's due to the prevalence of a celebrity pet, or the appearance of a certain pooch in a popular film, certain dog breeds experience spikes in popularity each year.
PetBreeds, a pets data site by Graphiq, ranked the dogs that jumped the most in popularity in 2016. Using data from the American Kennel Club, PetBreeds compared the popularity of all 189 dog breeds from 2015 to 2016 to determine the 51 breeds that climbed most in the ranks.
To make the list, breeds needed to move up at least one spot in this year's rankings, with the No. 1 dog climbing 14 places. When ties exist, the breeds are ordered by their change in popularity from 2014-2015, 2013-2014, 2012-2013 and 2011-2012.
From the poodle to the pug, these dogs are getting more popular to own.
