Artifact Dance Project closes out its season with “New Moves,” which features three new works by a trio of young choreographers:
- Samuel Kraus zeros in on the blues for his piece “Knockout.” The contemporary dance pulls from common themes in blues music: regret, redemption, desperation, love and faith. The dance ensemble includes Jeffery Griffith, Marquez Johnson, Monica Boccio, Lauren Renteria, and Sam McKinney.
As a punctuation to the dance, a rock ballad composed by the choreographer, Ian Urquhart and Steve Kraus will be performed.
- Natanael Myers’ “<breathe>>” is a contemporary dance inspired by, well, breath. Sound artist Karima Walker will provide the music, and the dancers include Isolde Edminster-Genet, Allison Knuth, Samantha McKinney, Hanna Moreno and Lauren Renteria.
- Knuth took the cycles we get stuck in as the impetus behind “20/200.” Electronic sounds paired with an acoustic sax provide the music, which has been produced and will be performed by Tucson musician César Manjarrez. The dance ensemble includes Jeffery Griffith, Marquez Johnson, Samantha McKinney, Hanna Moreno, Nathanael Myers, and Lauren Renteria.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. May 3-5 and 5 p.m. May 6 at Artifact’s studios, 17 E. Toole Ave. Tickets are $22. 235-7638 or artifactdanceproject.org.
