Custom-built drones will go in excess of 90 mph through a complex three-dimensional course set up inside Biosphere 2 on March 24.

Drones will be zipping overhead at the University of Arizona’s Biosphere 2 on Saturday, March 24. It’s all part of the Drone Racing League, which brings high-speed drone races to venues around the world

The event is being filmed for broadcast on ESPN and other networks in more than 75 countries,

A dozen pilots will fly custom-built drones, which can top 90 mph, according to a press release. They will zip through a three-dimensional course in hopes of winning the chance to compete in the season finale in Saudi Arabia.

Biosphere 2 will get into the spirit with a 9 a.m.-4 p.m. event zeroing in on the convergence of the physical, digital and biological worlds.

In addition, you’ll find hands-on experiences with drones, get the chance to study the science behind autonomous vehicles, see demonstrations of remotely operated vehicles and learn more about robotics and drones and the ways they support earth science.

The race will be broadcast in the fall.

And it’s a much-anticipated one: According to the release, more than 55 million fans around the world watched The Drone Racing League’s 2016 and 2017 seasons.
