There are plenty of reasons to go to see a play: You can laugh, cry, question, learn.
Opening
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat — Community Performance and Art Center, 1250 W. Continental Road. It might be worth a trip to Green Valley to catch this Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd musical based on the biblical story about Joseph, his 11 brothers, and an amazing multicolored coat. It’s got rock ’n’ roll, too — we suspect the authors of the Bible version might not recognize the story. It’s 7 p.m. June 16 and 23; 3 p.m. June 17. Catch it through June 25. $20. 399-1750. performingartscenter.thundertix.com.
Broadway Goes To Hollywood — Arizona Rose Theatre, 4500 N. Oracle Road in the Tucson Mall. Arizona Rose is filling Saturday nights with music this summer. At 7 p.m. June 17, the vocal group Desert Melodies will perform music from the movies and the Great White Way. On the program: tunes from “La La Land”, “Moulin Rouge”, “Singing in the Rain” and “The Bodyguard.” Not a bad way to spend a summer Saturday. $15. 888-0509. arizonarosetheatre.com.
Continuing
The Incredible Spider Guy — The Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway. You know the story: boy is bitten by a spider and acquires the powers and skills of an arachnid. But we bet you’ve never seen it the way the Gaslight does it. Call for dates and times. $19.95. 886-9428. thegaslighttheatre.com.
Joe’s patience is tested in Neil Simon’s “God’s Favorite,” a comedic treatment of the Book of Job. It’s at the Roadrunner Theatre through July 2.
God’s Favorite — Roadrunner Theater, 8892 E. Tanque Verde Road. The Bible is the inspiration for this play, too. Neil Simon turned to the Book of Job (you know, the beleaguered, nothing-ever-goes-right guy). Performances are 7 p.m. June 16, 17 and 23; 2 p.m. June 18. Continues through July 2. $15-$20. 207-2491. roadrunnertheatrecompany.org.
Mystery & Magic Dinner Theater Playhouse — Five Palms, 3500 E. Sunrise Drive. Dine on a three-course dinner with a different act for each. Comedy, magic, fun. 6:30 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays. $75. 861-4800. mysterydinner.theater.
The Dinner Detective Interactive Murder Mystery Show — Hilton Tucson East, 7600 E. Broadway. Help solve the mystery as you chow down on dinner. Ages 15 and up. 6 p.m. Saturdays. $49.95. 1-866-496-0535. thedinnerdetective.com.
