It was 30 years ago that a group of Tucson ragtag musicians got together and formed a garage-psychedelic band, claiming the name the Marshmallow Overcoat.
Itβs a rare time in the olβ town that they play β the band stopped touring in 2008. That rare time will be Saturday, Oct. 29, when the groupβs 30th anniversary Halloween show rocks out to benefit Tucson Downtown Radio KTDT 99.1 FM.
Marshmallow Overcoat (just βOvercoatβ for a few years in the β90s) has released nine albums and gained a load of fans over the years.
Though they havenβt played a concert since 2008, we figure even rusty these guys will fuzz us up.
Banding together for the concert are the bandβs early members, including Al Perry, Timothy Gassen, Matt Rendon, Scot Gassen and Dan Magee.
They will be joined by keyboard player Bill Kurzenberger, who joined the group in 2008.
βThis is an emotional opportunity for us to say thank you to Tucson for our 30-year journey, while also helping Downtown Radio,β says Timothy Gassen in a press release.
βWe hope old friends and a new generation of independent music fans alike will join us. This will be a very special night for Tucson music.β
Free CDs of Marshmallow Overcoatβs βVery Best Ofβ collection will be given out to concert goers β at least while supplies last.
The show opens at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, with the Desert Beats up first, then Cobra Family Picnic. The Marshmallow Overcoat finishes out the night.
Itβs happening at the Screening Room, 127 E. Congress St. Tickets are $6 at the door.
