If you ask Tucson music fans and artists alike they will tell you: Tucson is a great music town.
A national survey released Thursday shows we're better than great: We are really, really great.
In fact, Tucson comes in seventh overall in the list of top music cities in the United States. And we're second behind Austin, Texas â to which Tucson is often compared and aspires â in the regional rankings.
Here's what Value Penguin, a company that crunches numbers, does surveys and comes up with demographically based consumer lists, arrived at:
âĸ 7th overall nationally; Nashville, naturally, is No. 1, followed by Urban Honolulu, Hawaii; Seattle; Madison, Wisconsin; Austin, Texas; and Albany-Schenectady, New York. Phoenix-Mesa landed at 103rd overall.
âĸ We're No. 2 regionally, behind Austin and before Tulsa, Oklahoma.
âĸÂ We tanked to the bottom of the pile for having the most radio stations, coming in at 104 on the list of 200 cities.
âĸÂ We're 39th for number of record stores.
âĸ Tucson came in 31st for the percentage of the population with music degrees.
The Value Penguin study evaluated 200 metropolitan areas using statistical data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Thrillist, the Burau of Labor Statistics and several media surveys including USA Today and Travel & Leisure.
