One of the joys of strolling through the Tucson Mall food court is getting samples from Sarku Japan and Kelly's Cajun Grill. Kelly's piled two or three niblets of grilled meat onto a toothpick.

But this weekend, only Sarku was out and about. Kelly's Cajun Grill was dark, closed by the Pima County Health Department after the eatery in December failed its second consecutive inspection.

According to a story filed Sunday by my colleague Becky Pallack, health officials back on Dec. 3 rated Kelly's “needs improvement” after they discovered a cockroach problem in the kitchen. Twelve days later, inspectors still saw roaches.

Pallack reported that the restaurant has not been inspected since and from the looks of the restaurant Saturday afternoon it looks like it's closed. The restaurant's phone is disconnected and an owner or manager couldn't be reached.

Pallack said mall management reported that the restaurant is closed for renovations.

Meanwhile, the Burger King next to Kelly's also was closed. The small space was stripped of the Burger King logos and signs that had been there for years, and the menu board was removed. Stay tuned, we're going to see who's poised to take its place.
