There's not much you can do with $5 these days, but a group of merchants operating along the Sun Links streetcar route have an idea how to turn your five bucks into big savings.
The group of roughly 130 merchants spread out along the five streetcar districts — as well as the Sunshine Mile corridor on East Broadway — are offering discounts up to 50 percent with the Summer in the City card. The cards are on sale now for $5 through the TucsonSummer.com Participating merchants will start selling them in their businesses beginning June 1.
The cards are good through the summer at merchants including Borderlands Brewery, The Book Stop, Family Air, Krikawa Jewelry Designs, Chicago Music Store, Time Market and Gentle Ben's.
This is the second year the merchants have offered the program. Last year, 110 merchants participated as a way to unite the business communities along the five Sun Links districts: Fourth Avenue, Main Gate Square, Downtown Tucson, Mercado San Agustin and the University of Arizona, said John Jacobs, chairman of the Downtown Merchant Council's leadership committee.
This year at least 130 businesses are participating and a sixth district — Sunshine Mile on East Broadway between Country Club Road and Euclid — has jumped on board. That area is not connected to the streetcar.
Jacobs said businesses that sell the cards keep 80 percent of the proceeds.
